Wound clinic case study

Presence Wound Healing Center
St Francis Hospital, Evanston, IL

Dr Nair, Medical Director at the Presence Wound Healing Clinic (PWHC) was so impressed with the first results of the PICO System that she immediately tried it on several other patients. She explains, “Initially we thought that PICO was only for closed incisions, so we were impressed with how well it manages chronic and open wounds.”

First PICO case:

  • Amputation of 5th metatarsal, debridement of large Wagner Grade 4 ulcer
  • Patient: 48-year old male diabetic
  • Previous treatment: 2 weeks on tNPWT, moderate drainage
  • First week: 30% reduction in wound volume, drainage reduction, easier for patient

The PICO difference

PWHC serves out-patient clients who often do not qualify for home health care. The PICO system has given their patients a solution that can work without the need for a home nurse visit for dressing changes.

PWHC uses the PICO System with a variety of wound care products to achieve desired outcomes. “We often use ACTICOAT Flex 3 or ACTICOAT Flex 7 in conjunction with PICO, fillers typically associated with tNPWT,” explains Brenda.

“What surprised us most was the effectiveness on Martorell ulcers and pyoderma gangrenosa. For these wounds traditional NPWT causes too much pain. The PICO System fills the gap. Patients love it and the wounds are healing quickly.”
– Dr. Nair
“Ease of use, patient comfort and minimal nursing effort makes PICO wound care as easy as it gets.”
– Dr. Nair
